Essential Utilities Inc. (WTRG) Dividend Increase: Reliable Utility Growth Continues

On Wednesday, July 29, 2026, the Board of Directors of Essential Utilities, Inc. (WTRG) announced a quarterly dividend increase from $0.3426 to $0.3606 per share. The dividend will be payable on September 1, 2026, to shareholders of record as of August 11, 2026. This represents a 5.25% increase over the previous quarterly dividend.

Essential Utilities has paid consecutive quarterly cash dividends for over 80 years and has increased its dividend 36 times over the past 35 years—an impressive record of consistency.

Current Dividend Yield and Income Impact

At yesterday’s closing price of $40.70, this increase brings WTRG’s forward dividend yield to approximately 3.54%.

As an owner of 197 shares of Essential Utilities, this dividend increase adds $10.57 to my projected annual net dividend income.

Long-Term Dividend Growth Track Record

Essential Utilities is a Dividend Champion with a 33-year streak of dividend increases. Its dividend growth rates are solid and consistent:

  • 1-year: 5.6%
  • 3-year: 6.4%
  • 5-year: 6.6%
  • 10-year: 6.9%

This recent increase marks the third raise I’ve received since initiating my position in November 2024. Over that time, the quarterly dividend has grown from $0.3071 to $0.3606 per share—an increase of approximately 17.4%.

Commentary

I was expecting an increase closer to 6%, so this came in slightly below expectations. Still, the raise is solid and very much in line with the company’s long-term growth profile.

At the time of writing, WTRG represents about 0.76% of my portfolio and contributes approximately 0.74% of my projected annual dividend income. Following this increase, my yield on cost stands at 3.90%.

Quick Valuation Take

Essential Utilities appears fairly valued at current levels. As a regulated utility, it typically trades at a premium for its stability and predictability, and the current yield reflects that balance.

Dividend Safety and Outlook

The dividend appears very safe, supported by regulated and predictable cash flows from water and natural gas operations. Utilities like WTRG are known for their resilience, and the company should be able to continue delivering mid-single-digit dividend growth going forward.

Final Thoughts

This was a slightly below-expectation increase, but still a solid result. Essential Utilities continues to offer reliable income with steady growth, which is exactly what I want from a utility holding.

WTRG remains a dependable, low-volatility contributor to my dividend portfolio.
